Learn the Art of Perfume Making: First to Final Steps

The process of making perfume is not complex, just demands creativity along with good mathematical calculations to get a harmonious blend of aromas. Each note is infused to enhance the fragrance of others. Let’s understand the crucial creation of perfume:

Step 1: Calculation on Fragrance Notes

The foremost process in perfume making is developing three layers with specific ingredients in each note, serving as vibrant proportions.

  • The thumb-up rule to follow is 30% top note, 50-60% heart notes with 20-30% base note. You need to be careful when creating your signature fragrance and adding essence extract proportions, use a dropper for precision.

To prepare 30ml perfumes, you’ll be getting the 6-9mL top note, 15-18 ml of heart note, and 6-9 ml of the base note. Depending on viscosity we use 20-30 drops of extract oil in 1 ml, for instance:

20 drops X 30 ml = 600 drops

Step 2: Mixing the Essential oils and Alcohols

The main part of creating a perfume is mixing and matching all the essential ingredients in a delicate way to bring a mesmerizing version of the perfume at the end.

  1. Starting from the base to the top notes mix them in ethanol or vodka.

  2. To get a perfect solution combine the fragrance oil with alcohol adding drop by drop.

  3. Analyzing the right concentration of alcohol in various fragrances. Each drop can trigger the sensation allure of the perfume you are designing. Here are the desired concentrations of alcohol and fragrance oils in different scents, mark them:

  • Perfume Oil: The richest percentage 20-30% of essence oil is present with low concentration of alcohol i.e. 70-80%.
  • Eau de perfume (EDP) has 15-20% of perfumes oils with the rest 75-80 % alcoholic concentrations
  • Eau de Toilette (EDT) has the highest alcoholic concentration i-e 85-95%, while 5-15 % is only extracted.
  • Cologne has only 2-5% perfume oil with rest alcohol.

When a scientist starts to do experiments, he first calculates the percentages so that successful results come over. So, do your Maths, before experimenting to make perfume work best.

Step 3: Diluting to Get Polished Results

The most loved part of creating perfume is to dilute the fragrance if you feel something is missing. You can play with ingredients until satisfied, your lighter notes can be highlighted by adding a few more drops of any ingredients among those you already added. On the other end, you can reduce the intensity by water addition, as this will tone down the sharp sense of smell coming from your signature perfume.

Like water is an optional ingredient, glycerine is also optional. It is introduced to preserve the essence of perfume for a longer time. Glycerine with its moisture-retaining quality enhances the interaction of perfume on your skin. Choose or not, is all your choice!

Step 4: Waiting For Final Results

The science of successful results lies in the fact that your perfume settles down for at least 4 weeks to let the components react allowing your fragrance to evolve.

When you cook something and taste the food dish to find out if something is missing. Likewise, after 4 weeks you can test your fragrance to find out the strength and power of each note.

If you find it lighter aroma you can add 1-2ml of top note but this will alter the overall balance of the perfume. However, if the notes are sharp with strong fragrances then consider adding a few drops of alcohol to dilute the levels of essential oils.

Application of Perfume you crafted

  • If you want more edging essence don’t forget to hydrate your skin, or use body oils with perfumes.
  • Apply your perfume on the wrists, neck, or behind the ear region to glam the personality and radiate the complex scent.
  • To make your perfume last longer, always use combinations but this could be done if you are familiar with which note stays and which fades quickly.
  • Enjoy your seamless experience playing with fragrances.
